Leadership And "Dark Matter"
Your most important activities involve organizational "dark matter."
By Brent Filson - 1/2010
This month’s learning-leader lesson comes from findings of astrophysics that the universe is being shaped on galactic scales by an undetectable force.
Experts call this force "dark matter." Dark matter refers to hypothetical matter particles of unknown composition that do not emit or reflect enough electromagnetic radiation to be detected directly, but whose presence can be inferred from gravitational effects on visible matter such as stars and galaxies and clusters of galaxies.
The theory is that the universe is composed of only 20 percent visible matter and 80 percent dark matter.
When I read about dark matter, I thought about the many leaders in the companies I’ve worked with, leaders who focus on 20 percent "visible" issues, such as sales and marketing activities, logistical dynamics, organizational strategies and tactics, financial efforts, human resource undertakings, and the like. Methods for tackling those issues are taught in business schools.
But in focusing on the "visible," leaders neglect the "dark matter" of organizations — the 80 percent representing human relationships. What’s NOT taught in business schools.
Because your job entails working with employees of all ranks and functions, you should be particularly interested in organizational, dark-matter dynamics.
Make those dynamics work for you by:
- Recognizing the kind of relationships that are most important.
- Identifying ways to establish and promote cause-leadership relationships.
- Enhancing the effectiveness of those ways through systems and processes.
- Monitoring and evaluating your efforts.
I can help your individual leaders boost their job and career performance. For instance, check out our one-day Leadership Talk sessions that comes with a $50,000 guarantee.
