Who's The Smartest?
If the people you lead think you're smarter than they are, you may not be the best leader.
By Brent Filson - 10/2009
A powerful leadership lesson that you can use right now comes from the dating scene in Victorian London.
A great English beauty was wooed by two of the most prominent politicians of 19th century England: Gladstone and Disraeli. She went out to dinner with each on successive nights. When asked how the dinners turned out, she said, "When I dined with Disraeli, he let me believe that he was the smartest person in London. And when I dined with Gladstone, he let me believe that I was the smartest person in London."
Are you a Disraeli kind of leader or a Gladstone? Do you want the people you lead to think you're smart or they themselves are smart?
The trouble is, most leaders focus on themselves at the expense of the people.
As Lao Tsu said, "A leader is best when people barely know he exists; when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: 'we did it ourselves!'"
Your leadership should not only have the people believe you are smart enough to lead but, more importantly, that they, through your leadership, are smart enough to do great things.
