There is no end to being a better leader. You’ll never get it right, and that’s the good news.
Of course, if you are an order-giver, you get it right most of the time. You just have to give an order. You don’t need to be better.
But in most cases, giving orders is not the most effective way of leading.
The word “leader” comes from an old Norse word meaning “to make go.” Order leaders misunderstand who makes what go. They think they and their authority make things go. But authority is a poor excuse for leadership.
The best leadership involves not position but performance — performance requiring complex, evolving human interactions. The functions of those interactions are to have people make the free choice, the ardent choice, to be your cause leaders in achieving great results.
Manifesting this leadership is like mastering a musical instrument: it’s a never ending endeavor that takes playing frequently over long periods of time.
