The Way Of The Question Mark

A quick, simple way to boost your leadership effectiveness.

When it comes to leadership, your motivation is not important. It’s simply a given. If you aren’t motivated, you shouldn’t be a leader. What’s important is how to transfer your motivation to others so they’re as motivated as you.

For the past quarter of a century, I’ve described many ways to make this happen. Here. Here. And here.  Just to list a few.  

But there’s one way that doesn’t need to be explained in a book. It hardly needs an article. It just needs a daily, practically hourly, commitment. Making this commitment will be one of the most effective things you do as a leader.

From now on in all your leadership endeavors, just before you intend to make a statement, replace the full stop at the end of the statement with a question mark.

In other words, instead of making a declaration, ask a question.

For instance, your organization needs to have people go from point A to point B. A declarative leader might say, "Go from A to B."

Instead, you might ask: "Tell me what you think about going from A to B?" or "What’s the best way for you to go from A to B?" or "Tell me how I can support you going from A to B?" or "How will you take leadership of others going from A to B?"

Discipline yourself to ask questions rather than make statements, and you’ll increase your leadership effectiveness in ways that will surprise you.
